It’s not just the type of stories being covered in the news that creates this pessimistic illusion, but the abundance of it, Rosling points out. This knowledge of human nature has meant that media organizations focus on bad news for entertainment purposes, knowing full well it will keep the consumer’s attention longer than a good or average news story. People are more attracted to the most dramatic news stories. Why is it that we so often feel that the world around us is going up in flames, anyways? Rosling believes it has to do with the news: both how we consume it and how media organizations and journalists deliver it. Through simple and easily applied methods, he teaches readers how to keep their focus on the good in life and how to prevent them from being so quick to assume the worst or getting sucked into a downward spiral of negativity-something that happens to even the most positive among us. He’s just as much about attitude, showing his readers the importance of keeping a positive frame of mind. Rosling’s mantra: when you really look at it, things aren’t half as bad as they seem.Īlthough facts are his thing, being a statistician, Hans Rosling, with the assistance of his children and co-authors Ola Rosling and Anna Rosling Rönnlund, is not just about busting those oft-heard and dubious statistics. By stripping the facts down to their bare essentials, Rosling is able to prove the world is a significantly brighter and more hopeful place than we are often led to believe. It reveals the truths behind the numbers about how we all live.

He examines the extraordinary success story that was the Roman Empire and uses a new understanding of its continued strength and enduring limitations to show how Europe's barbarians, transformed by centuries of contact with Rome, eventually pulled it apart. Mixing authoratative analysis with thrilling narrative, he brings fresh insight into the panorama of the empire's end, from the bejewelled splendour of the imperial court to the dripping forests of "e Barbaricum"e. What had gone wrong? In this ground breaking book, Peter Heather proproses a stunning new solution to one of the greatest mysteries of history. The giants from Jack’s storylines along with the Screed from Zita’s are determined to seize Earth for their own nefarious purposes. In an exciting convergence between Hatke’s two successful middle-grade graphic-novel series Mighty Jack and Zita the Spacegirl, the titular protagonists team up to save Earth once again. Europeans feel themselves born with stigmata: "the white man has sown grief and ruin wherever he has gone." His pale skin signals his moral defectiveness. When the white man set foot in Asia, Africa, or America, death, chaos, and destruction followed. He shows how Europeans see themselves as "the sick man of the planet" whose pestilence causes every problem in the non-Western world (what he calls the South). Would you describe for us if there was a turning point or a moment that called to you and said, “it’s time to take my writing seriously?”ĪLEXIA GORDON: I can’t point to a specific “Aha!” moment when I decided I needed to return to creative writing, but after fifteen years in primary care I realized something was missing. You currently practice medicine in El Paso. I understand that you grew up in the Southeast, and were drawn to writing at an early age, but put that aside to pursue and achieve a career in medicine. While primarily a love story (a moving and realistic one at that), I Shall Be Near to You surprised me with its terrifying and riveting portrayal of 19 th century life. I Shall Be Near to You is one of the rare cases where the novel itself lives up to the author reviews and jacket cover blurbs. Inspired by over two hundred and fifty documented accounts of the women who fought in the Civil War while disguised as men, I Shall Be Near To You is the intimate story, in Rosetta’s powerful and gorgeous voice, of the drama of marriage, one woman’s amazing exploits, and the tender love story that can unfold when two partners face life’s challenges side by side. By Erin Lindsay McCabe Review by Angela DeMott. Fearing discovery of her secret, Rosetta’s strong will clashes with Jeremiah’s as their marriage is tested by war. Rosetta drills with the men, prepares herself for battle, and faces the tension as her husband comes to grips with having a fighting wife. But Rosetta decides her true place is with Jeremiah, no matter what that means, and to be with him she cuts off her hair, hems an old pair of his pants, and signs up as a Union soldier. Though she's always worked by her father’s side as the son he never had, now that Rosetta is a wife she's told her place is inside with the other women. Rosetta doesn't want her new husband Jeremiah to enlist, but he joins up, hoping to make enough money that they'll be able to afford their own farm someday. An extraordinary novel about a strong-willed woman who disguises herself as a man in order to fight beside her husband in the Civil War, inspired by a real female soldier's letters home. |
